A landmark in the heart of Jodhpur: Clock Tower

Ghanta Ghar or the Clock Tower of Rajasthan, is located in Jodhpur. Maharaja Sardar Singh (1880-1911) built it and the market that sprung up around it gets its name Sardar Market from this. If you notice, the tower dominates the cityscape of the entire area. 

In the old city area of Jodhpur, the Clock Tower is a popular landmark. It is designed in the old style of towers with minarets which houses an old English clock that is kept working by timekeepers. Visitors and tourists must visit the Clock Tower for its antiquity and for the fact that it has an enchanting market in its vicinity. The tower looks beautiful at all times, particularly at night when it is lit up. 

The vibrant market is close to the tower. You can reach it by walking through the narrow lanes. In the market, you will find all kinds of stalls—vegetables, sweets, spices, textiles, silver, curios and handicrafts. If you have some time, wander through these lanes, you’ll find it enchanting. 

Apart from the finest quality of spices, you can also look out for hand-embroidered material, handicrafts, flavoured tea and antiques. As you wander around, you will get a variety of sounds, sights and smells. You will see that there are three-arched gateways at the north and south ends. From here, the winding roads of the city fan out. On the west, you turn into the heart of the commercial hub of Jodhpur, with all its familiar sounds and noise. 

Since the Clock Tower is bang in the heart of town, you can easily get various modes of transport here. Cabs, auto-rickshaws and inter-city buses are easy to get from here.
