Taj Mahal's building is attributed to the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan who built this mausoleum in memory of his beloved wife, Arjumarid Bano Begum; popularly known as Mumtaz Mahal, who died in A.H. 1040 (630 A.D.).
Mumtaz Mahal's last wish for her husband was "to construct in her memory a tomb like the world had never before seen." Thus, Emperor Shah Jahan set out to construct this fairy tale as wonder.

Taj Mahal's building began in A.D. 1632 It was finished in 1648 A.D. Twenty thousand workers are said to have been employed there on a regular basis for seventeen years, for their lodging a tiny town named after the deceased empress was constructed adjacent to it,' Mumtazabad,' now known as Taj Ganj.

Taj Mahal's calligrapher was Amanat Khan Shirazi, his name appears on one of the Taj's doors at the end of an inscription. The verses on the tombstone had been intended by poet Ghiyasuddin, while Turkey's Ismail Khan Afridi was the dome manufacturer. Muhammad Hanif has been Masons ' supervisor.
Ustad Ahmad Lahauri built Taj Mahal. The material was carried in from allover India and Central Asia and transported to the site by a fleet of 1000 elephants. The main dome in the center is 187 ft. high.

Red sandstone was carried from Fatehpur Sikri, Punjab Jasper, China Jade and Crystal, Tibetan Turkey, Sri Lankan Lapis Lazuli and Sapphire, Arabia Coal & Comelian and Panna Diamonds. For inlay work in the Taj Mahal, semi-precious and precious stones have been used in all 28 kinds of rare.
The white marble was carried in distt from Makrana's quarries. Nagaur, Rajasthan. Copies of instructions (farmers) given to Raja Jai Singh can be seen in the Taj Museum for the purpose of Shah Jahan.
